Humor Helps You Learn
Humor is part of our style because it makes learning more enjoyable, but there´s always a more important point to humor: to make key concepts easier to remember.

  1. Is this course right for me?

This course is designed to prepare you to take and pass the FAA instrument rating knowledge test.

  2. What are the system requirements for this course?

Online course media requires a PC or Mac computer with a broadband Internet connection.

DVD for Windows media requires a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10.

  3. Can I use my smartphone to view the course materials?

To access course content from a smartphone or tablet you must purchase the online version of the course or package.

    Apple iPhone and iPad
We recommend using the Safari browser.

Free bonus! You can download your lessons and take them later on an iPad or iPhone—even when not connected to the Internet. The free King Schools Companion app allows you to view and complete lessons in your course when no Internet connection is available. The app will automatically sync progress between all of your devices when your iOS device returns online. The free app is available through the iTunes App Store by searching for "King Schools Companion."

Follow the steps below to access your courses on your iOS device offline:

    • After you have created your iLearn account by following the instructions in the email you'll receive after you complete your order,
    • Download the King Schools Companion app through the iTunes App Store onto your iOS device while you are connected to the Internet.
    • Once your course(s) have finished loading, you can start studying offline!

    Android
Your course is compatible with the Google Chrome browser on your Android device. The Chrome browser is available for free download from the Google Play Store by searching for "Chrome".

  4. Are the courses current?

KING courses are up-to date with the latest information and subjects areas the FAA wants you to know. KING Interactive Video Ground School and Test Prep courses contain FAA-style questions which are representative of all the subject areas the FAA tests.

Warning: You can’t just memorize test questions and expect to pass your FAA Instrument Rating Written Test. Why? The FAA used to make their test question banks publicly available; however, they have not done so for many years. In fact, the FAA has recently gone through their entire database and changed every single test question and answer in order to eliminate test question memorization. No one, including test prep educators, has access to the FAA question banks. To be a safe and competent pilot-in-command, and to pass your required tests, there is no shortcut. You must acquire the necessary pilot knowledge.

Online Course Media - Your online course is always up-to-date as the course is automatically updated whenever changes occur.

DVD for Windows Media - Your disc-based course is always up-to-date when it is shipped from KING. You can subscribe to our update subscription service at an additional charge and we will send you "hotsheets" whenever questions change.

  5. Is there a particular order to follow? Are some lessons easier than others?

First, select the "Click HERE to Start" menu icon on your Instrument Rating Ground School & Test Prep Course home screen. From there, you will learn how to use the course effectively with and gain insight to the features and benefits of the course. Just follow the path from start to finish; it´s that easy. Of course you can skip around if you chose but we recommend staying on the lesson path.

As you begin your flight training lessons, you will want to review the pilot skills courses as they will tie into your practical flying.

Once you have passed the FAA Instrument Rating Knowledge Test, it´s time to start your Instrument Rating Practical Test Course so you will ace your FAA Instrument Rating practical test (a.k.a. Instrument Rating checkride).

Some lessons will be more challenging than others. The advantage of having a home study course is you can repeat any lesson over and over again. You can always call or send us feedback about concepts or questions for further clarification.

The Instrument Rating Ground School & Test Prep Course contains approximately 13 hours of video clips.

hello - i really enjoyed your course. While taking the practice tests, i felt there were many redundant questions within singles tests. For example, on the random practice test, i was asked twice, consecutively, about outer markers. I feel the randomness of the questions could be improved, therefore, helping the student. thanks!

Thorough and Complete
After completing the course I felt totally prepared to take and pass the written. I used a different company for my PPL and found the King course far superior in depth and completeness. I wish I had used King for my PPL too! I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to thoroughly and efficiently master the written material for your IR!

Learned a Great Foundation!
King Schools is the only way to train for your ratings. I received a great learning foundation for my Instrument Rating. The FAA just revamped the IRA test questions in the middle of my course which made me a little nervous. After completing the IRA test today, I came to realize that King Schools prepared an outstanding foundation for me, so that I was able to answer any new question the FAA would throw at me with ease.

2nd course...2nd PASS!!
I used King Schools for my private, but when I started my IFR training, the 141 school I attended only used Gleim. I tried Gleim for several weeks, but it wasn't working for me. I paid for the King IFR training, and everything made sense! I'll be back for future training!!!

The BEST Self-Study course!!
I decided to try the Instrument Written course after I saw several previews of Martha and John King's series on YouTube and I was very happy with what I purchased! I think it's absolutely necessary to understand the basis of the knowledge exam's questions, especially for the written. I'm by no means a student that can absorb knowledge efficiently just by reading it, so getting the graphic explanation was a must. I did the Sporty's course for the Private Pilot several years ago, however it could get very dry for me. I think that the Kings have a natural talent at presenting these courses and it clicks much better for me. The question database is decent with the King's, but I highly recommend a secondary course like the Gleim or Sheppard Air (Sheppard Air has by far the most up to date database, but Gleim has better software). The reason I say this is because the FAA will often reword questions and add new, more confusing questions to their database in order to fool even the most experienced pilots. Although King Schools has an adequate database, it may not be enough to get a 90 depending on what the PSI/CATS gods randomly generate for you. However, I don't believe using just the Gleim or just Sheppard Air would be enough to pass unless you're an extreme memorizer. To each their own, and I definitely believe in the King system!!

The course contained sufficient quantities of questions that I went into the exam feeling well-prepared to pass the exam.
The course contained sufficient quantities of questions that I went into the exam feeling well-prepared to pass the exam. The questions on the FAA exam were slightly different than those presented by King, but the concepts were well-covered throughout the course. I liked that it was self-paced and the suggestions for Test Taking were very helpful. I plan to use King for any future endorsements.

Great course!
I highly recommend this course. I used it as a supplement to my instructor and hearing the information from a different angle made everything come together for me in a very short period of time. I feel like anyone could benefit from this no matter how much or how little that you know before starting. I learned a few tricks to better understand the material and how to understand the tricky questions that the FAA throws in there.

Did as promised, nothing more.
The Kings said I would pass the test, and I did...easily. The course did an excellent job preparing me for the test. The videos and presentation was a bit dated, but so is the FAA. It moved along quickly, with lots of stops and starts to keep me from zoning out or getting bored. However, after starting the flight training I realized how lacking the course was when it came to real world application. It wasn't coherent....just a collection of facts and info that you regurgitated on the test. However in the plane you are supposed to put all that together and John and Martha don't tell you how. I ended up buying an ASA book which helped put everything in context. If I had to do it all over again I would have bought the book first, and then used the King course. But yeah, still would have bought the course. I got my money's worth.

Not as good as expected
I took the instrument course To go to the CFII test. While I passed, I was disappointed in the test taking module accompanying the course. The test included HELICOPTER set questions for the airplane CFII test, and included antiquated questions. There were only four test options, so I was basically repeating those four tests to learn. The questions rote. Not an overall pristine experience.

FAA Questions Not Similiar
I think King instruction is great. However, the instrument course is way to tailored to specific (old) FAA test questions. I took the test today and only 30-40% of the question structure was similar. What is great - is the logic behind the instruction. My advise would be to re-do the videos with no actual FAA test question structure (tons of reference to this through). Several questions on the exam that were not addressed in the King instruction. I will use King for further training without a doubt - just would like to see the instruction pace with the changes FAA is introducing. Still - Martha and John are best at explaining all aviation concepts.

Instrument Rating FAA Knowledge Test Course - Online

Solid course, some hickups
Strong course to work on at your own pace. A FEW of the figures used as reference to answer questions are illegible leaving the answer a guess rather than a formulated answer, these figures are however clear during the actual written exam. Some videos occasionally would have issues with loading despite good internet connection, sometimes multiple attempts were needed to view the video before proceeding. Still passed the written 1st attempt 88% worth the investment for ease of use and ability to take multiple practice exams with feed back.

Thank you for the great help!!
I thoroughly enjoyed the course and found a fantastic tool to prepare for the knowledge test. I feel that, while being a great way to learn and prepare specifically for the test, the course should not be seen as a replacement of the rest of the more comprehensive material. As much as the course built my confidence and "forma mentis" in preparation for the test, it also made me aware of how much more I will have to retain for the purposes of actually acquiring sufficient skills and proficiency to fly IMC as safely as possible. In any case, thank you and WELL DONE on the course.

While the questions are not exactly as seen on the test, I favor King Schools to other programs because John and Martha help you understand the background concepts and material instead of just memorizing the questions. Good material - passed!
Passed the test first attempt - that's the most important metric! The King material seemed a bit "dated" (shocking, but the FAA material appears to have been modernized and the King material is a bit behind). All in all the King prep was sufficient - I entered confidently and passed.

That was unexpected
I originally took this course in 2008. Never took the actual exam. That was cd/dvd oriented. This course someone needs to go through. It kept blowing me back to a login screen. Some of the courses skipped around. For example if you took say weather, first entry, when you completed that section there was a new first one, the second one was checked as completed. I thought it was just me, then another section did the same thing. BTW, the next course - the checkride course was just user hostile. It kept thinking I wasn't me and demanded my password, other security questions even though I had just used the previous section moments before. At one point I called up because I had so much trouble. I'm using Windows 10, so it's MS Edge browser and Firefox. Firefox seemed to work better. I'd offer to go through it again and help, however I'm afraid you take me up on the offer. The course requires a lot of cognitive attention, as it should. The material isn't easy. Someone should get a pat on the back for breaking the segments up. They're long enough and the tests quick enough that you tend to retain it. I think that part is where it should be. Any longer and I bet I'd tune it out.

COULD NOT HAVE PASSED WITHOUT
COURSE WAS VERY WELL LAID OUT. ALL TOPICS WERE COVERED TO THE POINT WHERE I UNDERSTOOD WHAT WAS BEING TAUGHT. THIS IS MUCH BETTER THAN JUST MEMORIZING THE ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS….THIS IS REAL KNOWLEDGE THAT CAN BE USSED TO STAY LEGAL, BUT MOST OF ALL, TO STAY SAFE!!!!

The Kings do an amazing job making the content understandable and memorable. Throughout the course they give you tips to maximize your test results!

Grat Job - really glad it works on my mobile device (gleim does not). The website does look a little dated, but everything worked and the information was great - actually really liked the musical feed back on a right question and completing a section.

Course should have been better
If you are hoping for a very insightful and easy to understand online course, this is not it. Unless you have a pretty good working knowledge of IFR flight this course does a poor job of explaining and helping a student comprehend instrument flight. For all the good reviews I was expecting a much better course presentation.

Solid prep for the test!
The King Course was the only test prep tool I used for the written exam. Passed on first try with score of 88. I had previously read the FAA materials over a two month period but found I wasn't retaining the information. The King Course solved that problem. I esp liked the ability to take the course on my iPad which made it much more convenient to squeeze in lessons during the day.

Hitting home
I have tried other home study courses, and I came back to King Schools. Nobody prepares you to take the FAA exams like King Schools. Its as close as you can get to a guarantee of a passing grade. The material is presented in a way that you can understand and absorb.

Solid and entertainingly hoaky
All the material is there and is presented clearly and concisely by, apparently, your grandparents as they were in the 80s. If that doesn't bother you, it adds just enough charm to keep the whole thing from seeming too routine. On the other hand, while I'm sure it's a major challenge keeping abreast of all the developments in IFR technology, some of the material really does feel borderline obsolete. But then, the FAA is using charts on the test that you simply don't find in circulation anymore, so I guess they're just teaching to the test.

Good Solid Score!
I passed the test for my instrument rating with a good solid score! John and Martha did an excellent job breaking the material down into bite-sized modules. The practice exams helped me identify areas needing extra study. When I tested, I went with confidence.

"90" YESTERDAY ON MY FIRST TRY
The King IFR course is indispensible - not only for a good grade on the test but for UNDERSTANDING the material. Well thought out, clearly organized and explained - i did score a 90 on my test first time around. THE single most valuable part of this course is the SIGNOFF you get that enables you to actually TAKE your written test, once you've completed the course. AUTOMATICALLY. This alone makes it worth the cost of the course. Can't recommend it any more highly.

great test prep course
As long as you are methodical and put in the time to listen to the lectures and do the questions there is no way you will fail the test. The videos may seem a bit "old school" at times but frankly the FAA test is as old school as it gets. A great many questions are irrelevant in the times of glass cockpits in GA aircraft but that's the way it is. This is the only theory I had and it was more than sufficient. Great job by the Kings!

Informative and well presented
I enjoyed this course, learned a great deal. if you enjoy learning from videos this is a great course. Helped with the test, though I didn't score as high as I'd liked, thanks to weird wording on questions, I passed confidently. Thank you John and Martha!

Good way to get introduced.
I wish there was an easy way to determine which areas were my weakest overall. The analysis options seem to be limited. May future versions could include a running analysis of knowledge area codes the student is missing on quizzes and practice test. Or, maybe I just wasn't doing it right.
